EDITORIAL: Saving Marriages For All The Wrong Reasons

In a recent Oklahoma study on Family Fragmentation, conducted by the House Human Services Committee, lawmakers concluded that for every dollar spent keeping families together, the government spends $1,000 on 'clean up' from the fallout of broken families. In an Aug. 26 news release, lawmakers said, "The ripple effects of family fragmentation are costing Oklahoma taxpayers millions of dollars each year and the problem may only get larger . . ."

I have do agree and disagree. I think that the study was meant to get the attention of the Legislature. Obviously the money involved is the secondary cost of divorce. However, the case for any change sometimes involves reaching for any asset one can think of! If it takes looking at money, the language of politicians, to get things done, more power to them! Sadly, money is more important than we want to admit. With many studies stating that money differences are the number one or two cause of divorce, people need to know the real financial cost of divorce. Isn't it something like 52 billion in Oklahoma? I cannot remember the actual numbers. But let's look at it. You have the legal costs. Then you have changed IDs, sold homes and cars, day care, reeducation[usually of the wife], and essentially making two complete households out of one. Car, house, utilities, groceries, maintenance, more complicated and expensive tax filings, destroyed credit, interest payments, late fees, cancellations, bounced check charges when the money comes up short and more I can only imagine. How many broken families have to enter long-term counseling[or should, but can't afford it]? Then the divorcees begin supporting new families, new spouses/lovers and kids, etc. And you thought it was too hard to pay the bills when you were married, and got mad enough to get a divorce to solve the problem? When couples contemplating divorce are very hurt with each other and cannot think rationally, maybe a cold, hard look at the dollars and cents cost of their decision could be the thing that turns things around! I’m here to tell you… Satan uses divorce as a tool to distract God’s sheep. Satan takes up the believer’s time and money in a divorce. Time and money that could be used to further the Gospel. If the sheep aren’t “healthy” (i.e. they are going through a divorce or recovering from a divorce) then the Shepard isn’t going to get much out of them. Anything that will point out this “pandemic” exists, including the subject study, may get the flock the help it desperately needs, whether from the politicians or the church.
