Scott Hume has been Baptist Collegiate Ministries Director for five years at the Weatherford campus of Southwestern Oklahoma State University.
“To begin with, I just want to say that my wife of 25 years, LeaAnne Pratt Hume, finished her doctorate (in Nursing Practice) last October,” Hume said with a proud smile.
He also has an encouraging outlook on current college students demonstrating Christian faith and advancing the Gospel.
“These students I serve love the Gospel and love sharing it in their daily lives,” Hume said. “Be encouraged! There is a group of students actively engaged in punching holes in the darkness daily for the sake of the Cross.
“The kids today, they’re here because they want to be part of (BCM), not because it is socially advantageous.” Hume said. “The greatest influencer of today’s college students is other students, and this group takes that seriously as missionaries on campus.”
The desire of the SWOSU BCM is to meet needs on campus. One unique way they do that is when the weather helps.
“Electrical power goes out in Weatherford on occasion,” Hume said, “so we installed a generator in this building, which brings in students wanting to get warm.”
Another way they reach out is through food. “Nationwide, hunger among college students is a real issue, and SWOSU is no different,” Hume said.
In addition to free meals served on Wednesdays, a snack basket is always available, no questions asked, for students to grab a power bar, fruit or other snacks. Also, the BCM collaborated with SWOSU and set up a fund for students unable to have a consistent healthy meal to receive 10 meals on a commuter plan from anyone in Student Services on campus.
“We do everything we can for students, faculty and staff to know we care,” Hume said. “Once they know we care, we have earned the right to share the Gospel through our lives and our words.”
Because of the generous giving of Oklahoma Baptists through the Cooperative Program, an amazing array of ministries are supported. This unified giving encourages fellowship with other believers all over the world. Collectively, Oklahoma Baptists are advancing the Gospel together.
